Beat the Heat with Kool-Aid Slushies

DSC_0172.jpg

My son had his tonsils and adenoids taken out this week. Because of that, and because of the major heat wave sweeping across the state, I have been on a mission to make treats that are soothing to a sore throat as well as cool and refreshing enough to help beat the heat. We have made ice cream, sorbet, milkshakes, floats, Popsicles and smoothies. Last night, I was in the mood for something different. Remembering that Jacob had been begging for a slushy drink from Sonic the day before, I decided to make our own slushy drinks right at home. In my pantry, I happened to have a container of Kool-Aid to use to make Kool-Aid Popsicles. When I picked up the container, I noticed a recipe for Kool-Aid Slushies. Quickly reading through the recipe, I realized that this was exactly what we needed...something quick, easy, soothing and refreshing.

This recipe for slushy drinks hits the spot with both kids and adults alike. As an adult, you may wish that your beverage had a little rum or something in it, but even without the addition of alcohol, you will appreciate how this tasty treat cools you off.

Kool-Aid Slushies

Place 1 cup water, 1/2 cup of your favorite flavor Kool-Aid soft drink mix and 1 cup ice cubes in a blender container; cover.

Blend on high speed until smooth. Add an additional 2 cups ice cubes; cover. Blend, using pulsing action, until smooth. Serve immediately. Store leftover slush in the freezer.

Recipe makes 7 (1/2 cup) servings.

OK, so the fresh fruit slushes (with Strawberry and Lime) from Sonic are my favorite!! This sounds great for when you don't want to go out and battle traffic. Now I just need to get some Kool-Aid! Do you think it would work with Crystal Light?

Aw, you're such a great mom, Kristen! I'm sure that Kool-Aid slushy made him feel so much better. My husband's been considering having his tonsils removed; if he finds out that I'll make this slushy recipe, he might just go through with it! :)

I stopped drinking Kool Aid when they discontinued my favorite flavor, Purplesaurus Rex...it was a grape lemonade flavor...I drink it everyday.

I bet Gatorade slushies would be good too. Nothing quenches a thirst for me like Gatorade.

I had my tonsils out when I was 4, and all I remember is getting chocolate ice cream from the nurse when I was allowed to eat. One of these slushies would have been delicious, too!

Aw, poor thing! He's lucky to be getting all those yummy treats! (The only things I ate when I had mine out were Italian ice and Snak Paks.)

I hope he's feeling better, soon! But with a slushie like that, I wouldn't blame him for staying sick as long as he possibly can! Yum!

When we decided to spend the summer in the Valley, people warned us how hot it got here. I replied that we were from Kansas. Well, the last few days the heat in Kansas has topped the temperature in the Valley. It has been in the upper 80s here, but the slushies look great here, too.

Must be my day to think about Grandma Sumner. She used to make kool-aid popsicles in a rubber ice cube tray that came with her old GE refrigerator, They had a unique rubbery taste but we loved them. Always red or purple.
